Wanderer

Spring Release

Every January, when the breeding grounds of the midwestern United States are covered in snow, millions of monarch butterflies huddle up in the mountains of central Mexico.

Having endured a journey of thousands of miles just four months prior, they perch in trees and await the arrival of spring.

As the temperatures climb and daylight hours increase, the monarchs become reproductively mature and ready themselves for the spring migration. Mating commences in Mexico, but will continue on throughout their northward migration into the Midwest.

Milkweed

Summer Release

During spring migration, the mother monarch travels north until she locates sprouting milkweed. Upon it she deposits her eggs, from which the offspring will carry on the journey, laying their eggs as far north as the milkweed grows.

As a manner of defense milkweed produces toxic chemicals known as cardenolides. Not only have monarchs evolved to tolerate the plant’s poisonous properties, but it is the only food source from which developing caterpillars will feed from. Without native milkweed plants, monarchs have a 0% chance of survival.

Meh He Ko

Fall Release

By September, when milkweed plants have started to die back, monarchs begin their autumn migration to Mexico.

The increased logging of their wintering grounds has resulted in a loss of habitat for the migrating butterflies.

In addition, the widespread planting of genetically modified crops, increased use of neonicotinoids, erratic weather patterns, and shifts in climate are all key factors that have been implicated as causes of the monarchs decline in recent years.
